The present invention relates to a method for determining the position and orientation of the left ventricle and / or adjacent regions in 3 - d - image data sets of the heart, which with an imaging tomographic process under contrast medium injection were recorded. In the method, the left ventricle initially coarsely segmented and the long major axis (24) is determined from the segmented image data. Starting from this long main axis (24), with the use of casting search rays (26) in a plane end points (28) of a boundary line (27) of the septum determined. The segmented image data, the long major axis (24) as well as the end points (28) define the position and orientation of the left ventricle firmly in the image data set. On the basis of this automatic analysis of the image data can then associated with a segment model and / or a surface model for more precise segmentation of the image data to be adapted to the image data set. The method does not require any time-consuming interaction with the user.
