The device has an oval shaped retaining unit (2) with a retaining surface at which a rotatable stabilization unit (3) is arranged in the same level as the retaining unit. The stabilization unit is arranged firmly in an edge region of the retaining unit, where the edge region is softer than the inner region of the retaining unit and/or the stabilization unit. The retaining unit partially adapts to the geometric form of a toilet bowl. An independent claim is also included for a method of extracting stool samples from a toilet bowl.
