The system has a protection device for protecting a danger zone of a machine. A capacitive proximity sensor monitors surrounding area of the machine. The sensor includes an evaluation and control circuit (81) determining the capacitance of a condenser electrode (41), which is defined by an object in the proximity of the electrode. The control circuit produces a control signal for the machine based on the determined capacitance. An independent claim is also included for a method of protecting a machine or driverless transport system.
