The method involves a listener or viewer entering alphanumeric text specific to a broadcast station name or song title into a hand-held remote control which transmits the information to a receiver or player, preferably over a radio link. The entered text is compared with identification signals transmitted by the broadcaster or stored on disk and as a result the desired station or recorded track is automatically selected. In addition to the usual keys the remote unit also has a display indicating the text input by the user. Independent claims are included for equipment to execute the method of the invention.
