The device has a tension cone (03) which possesses several sliding surfaces (11) extending in axial direction and which in each case has uniform inclination opposite to axle of tension cone and which taper over each other at free end. The clamping jaw (07) has wedge-shaped longitudinal section and lower surface is adjustably arranged over one of the sliding surfaces of tension cone. The wedge angle of the clamping jaw corresponds with the angle of inclination of the sliding surface in such a manner that the top side (10) of the clamping jaws substantially runs parallel to the axis of the tension cone whereby a stopper is provided at the narrow end of the clamping jaws which protrudes over its top side. In order to move the clamping jaw axially, the winding core (19) corrodes by sliding on the tension cone. An independent claim is also included for the method for operation of clamping jaws in a roll changer.
