The method involves switching an internal combustion engine using an engine controller for the supply of exhaust gas flow, which is hotter than in normal operation, for a given time period when heating a catalytic converter. Engine- and/or operating parameters characterizing the converter heating are compared using a predetermined reference value for the parameters, to diagnose the normal or faulty converter heating.
