The method involves obtaining measurement values of operating variables of an internal combustion engine at different operating points. A mean value for values of a characteristic parameter is determined. A preset possible error is excluded as improbable, when an amount of deviation of the mean value from a preset reference value of the characteristic parameter for error-free operation of the internal combustion engine is smaller than a preset threshold value. The preset possible error is classified as a presumably available error, when the amount of deviation is larger than threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine.
