A container captures effluent water and a lighter fluid e.g. oil. The container (1) has a float (11) whose operation is independent of liquid density and constantly determines the water depth (5) irrespective of the presence of lighter fluids. The float is mechanically linked to a shut-off valve (12) that opens between a balancing chamber (7) and a light liquid holding tank (9) when the water reaches or exceeds a pre-determined depth. The valve closes when the water level falls below this depth. the float is linked to a height-adjustable overflow (13) outlet (10) from the balancing chamber (7). The overflow (13) is a height-adjustable pipe (14).
