In an industrial process plant having individual process modules (PM's) with predetermined self-sufficient functions, communicating with an overriding automation device (AD) with service and observation functions, the AD (a) has a data bank consigned with a module image (18) for each PM, showing the function as a flow image (19) with inlets (20) and outlets (21) and (b) automatically creates a plant image (23) with the plant configuration from the module images.
