The display has gate lines (42) and data lines (44) crossing each other to define pixel areas (P1-P4). A thin film transistor is placed at left or right side of the pixel area according to pixel columns, using a column inversion technique. A pixel electrode (48) is arranged in an alternating pattern with a common electrode (46). The gate lines are arranged parallel to the common and pixel electrodes. An independent claim is also included for a method of driving an in-plane switching liquid crystal display.
