The device has a set of gate and data lines crossing each other on a substrate for defining a set of pixel regions. A common electrode (105) is formed on the pixel region, where the electrodes are shaped such that an upper surface area is different than a lower surface area. A pixel electrode is positioned adjacent to each of the common electrode on the pixel region, and a liquid crystal layer is placed between the substrates. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing an in-plane switching (IPS) mode LCD device comprising a gate line on a substrate.
