Treatment of fresh water for brewing beer, involves taking a small part-stream, saturating it with lime, neutralising it with hydrochloric and sulfuric acids and then using it directly or mixing it with the larger part-stream
A method for the treatment of fresh water for brewing beer, in which a small part-stream is first saturated with lime and then neutralised with hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid before being used for brewing, either directly or after mixing in a given ratio with the second, larger part-stream. A method for the treatment of brewery mash liquor (I) by dividing fresh water (13; 113) or treated fresh water (21; 121) into (a) a small part-stream (25; 125) and (b) a large part-stream (27; 127), treating (a) with calcium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid to give (c) a first treated part-stream (53; 153) and either feeding specified amounts of this into another process stage for the production of a liquid such as beer or mixing it in a specified ratio with part-stream (b) (27;127). In the claimed method, part-stream (a) is either saturated with lime in a tank (29; 129) and clarified in the tank to give a first, clear, non-cloudy lime-saturated part-stream (39; 139) or saturated with lime before entering the tank and then separated in the tank (29; 129) to give (39; 139), then part-stream (39; 139) is discharged from the tank (29; 129) and subjected to a pH change by treatment with HCl and H2SO4 so as to give the first treated part-stream (c) (53; 153) or mixed with a specified amount of (a) and then treated with HCl and H2SO4 to give (c). An independent claim is also included for a plant for the production of (I), comprising a tank (29; 129) for the production of a first part-stream (39; 139) with a pH of 12-13.5 from fresh water (13; 113) or from a first part-stream (25; 125) taken from pretreated fresh water (21; 121).
