The rotary damper (1) has a cover (27), to close a housing (2). The housing has a shaft (8) rotatably mounted on it, about an axis of rotation (9). The shaft is operable by a torque that is to be damped. A compressible frictional damping lining (24) placed within the housing, acts between the housing and the shaft, to dampen a motion of rotation of the shaft along a direction of rotation (20).
