The connecting system for pipes (6) carrying carbon dioxide coolant gas comprises a socket (9) which fits on to one pipe and a connector (8) on the other pipe which fits into it. An O-ring (11) is fitted between the connector and socket and a second ring (10) is fitted on the socket side of this. The second ring is more gas-tight than the O-ring and has beveled edges which fit against the connector and socket surface, the edge which faces the connector being at a steeper angle than that facing the socket.
