The appliance has a functional part (2) which can be separated from a base part (3). A connector (4) on the functional part is provided with a contact blocking device (7) for preventing current being supplied to the consumer of the functional part when the functional part is separated from the base part. The base part has an actuating element (14) which cooperates with the contact blocking device.
