The valve for a floor cleaning appliance, and especially a vacuum cleaner, has an antechamber (20) in the valve housing (1) at the valve seat (8) to allow air to flow in on an initial lift of the valve stem (3) from the valve seat on reaching a given underpressure threshold. The antechamber has openings for a partial air volume through the valve housing when the valve stem is moved further from the valve seat on an underpressure increase and free the openings (11). With an increasing underpressure the valve stem is moved further axially from the valve seat into the open position for a sufficient air flow (22) from the ambient atmosphere (A) into the underpressure zone (U).
