A moisture controlled ground support surface, especially for equestrian use, has a water proofed recess (16) filled with a granular layer (20) and with drains (18) and water supply (22) to regulate the moisture content. The riding surface is further improved by support mats (32) embedded into the granular layer. The mats are porous and can have surface profiling to provide improved grip. The mats also enable a coarser material to be used. The water proofing can be provided by membranes.
