A system for protecting buildings and rooms from flooding following broken water pipes has the main shut off valve held in the open position by a ratchet grip, e.g. a solenoid (10) gripping a notch (5) in the valve handle. The valve handle is fitted with a spring (3) which is tensioned to close the valve when the solenoid is released. A flood control module (11) is connected to several sensors (12 to 14) and operates the shut off sequence if two or more sensors detect water, eliminating premature release during normal cleaning operations.
