The unit has an airbag made up of fabrics and including two chambers (10, 20), which are fillable with gas by an inflator. A contraction is formed between the chambers in the filled condition. Catch straps (40, 50) are provided in the area of maximum thickness of the chambers, and attached on the fabrics and both sides of the contraction. The straps partially cover the contraction and extend over the entire breadth of the contraction.
