The section of the ball neck (12) between the holder on the vehicle and the coupling ball (14) is provided with a contact unit (70) which has an insulating housing (72) with a cover (86) and a contact insert (74) which is mounted in the housing and supports the electrical contacts (76). The section of the ball neck supporting the contact unit has a recess which enters the section from an opening (36) at the side of the ball neck. The insulating housing extends with at least one partial area (78) into the recess and preferably with at least half its axial length. The housing can protrude at the side over the opening of the recess by its partial area (82) which supports the cover (86).
