The chip card (1) has a card body (2) incorporating a semiconductor chip module (3) and an inductive coupling coil (4) adjacent the card edge. The part of the card body enclosed by the inductive coupling coil incorporates magnetisable particles, e.g. ferrite particles, at least within selected areas. The ferrite particles are incorporated in an intermediate card layer enclosed between opposing outer layers which do not incorporate ferrite particles. A ferrite particle free gap is provided between the inner area of the card incorporating the ferrite particles and the inductive coupling coil.
