The system uses branch metrics for rapid decoding of error-correction turbo-code. In a processing circuit used to decode turbo-code, there is a need to calculate the probability of transition of state in order to enable MAP decoding. To resolve this problem, error correction decoding is effected by executing the operations in a prior route metric processing stage, based on a branch metric. This consists of processing the branch metric for a transition towards an adjacent instant. A soft decision information processing stage then consists of processing N bits of soft decision information and basing this on the branch metric, the prior route metric, and a later route metric obtained by processing the branch metric.
