The process involves identifying the presence of a signal including modulation characteristics in accordance with that of a message of an S mode response to be pre-detected. The duration of the identified signal is measured. The duration is compared with a minimum duration that is determined from an expected duration of the message of the S mode response. An independent claim is also included for a process of detection of S mode responses.
