The device has a compartment (3) enclosing an insulator separated at its cold side by a wall (2) of a compartment (1) enclosing a liquid. The liquid compartment (1) communicates with the exterior through a pipe (4) which can be sealed by a stopper (5) which melts at a definite temperature. The heat transmitted by the insulator is absorbed by the evaporation of the liquid. An independent claim is also included for a device for forming a fixed or moveable fire resistant door or fire resistant barrier.
