This model is used by an on-line monitoring system to determine if the transient operation of the casting apparatus is normal. The monitoring system can still be used to predict impending casting failure, one of the catastrophic failures that can occur in a continuous casting apparatus during the transient operation. The processing variables that are most likely related to the predicted break are identified by the system, and appropriate control actions can be taken to prevent a real break. / P
