P Method and system for real-time monitoring of transient operations in a continuous casting apparatus to prevent casting failuresTransient operations (changes in inlet nozzle, tundish, product grade) ) are treated as batch processes using multiple principal component analysis to develop a multivariate statistical model and characterize normal processing transitions based on selected historical processing data. This model is used by an on-line monitoring system to determine if the transient operation of the casting apparatus is normal. The monitoring system can still be used to predict impending casting failure, one of the catastrophic failures that can occur in a continuous casting apparatus during the transient operation. The processing variables that are most likely related to the predicted break are identified by the system, and appropriate control actions can be taken to prevent a real break. / P
