The apparatus (24) has a high pressure fuel tank supplied with fuel by a high pressure fuel pump (4). Injectors injecting the fuel into a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine are connected to the tank. A high pressure fuel control tank (26) is connected to a safety valve (31) that opens when pressure in the control tank exceeds a chosen pressure limit. An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling operation of a fuel injection system e.g. common rail diesel injection system.
