The method involves estimating a temperature in a cylinder (1) for a measuring point of a combustion cycle. A pressure in the cylinder is measured and another pressure in the cylinder is estimated. The estimated and measured pressures are compared for two different measuring points. The comparison result of the estimated and measured pressures is used to calculate gas mass in the cylinder.
