The method involves retrieving characteristics used for the regulation and/or control of operation parameters of an internal combustion engine, from a signal, of a sensor, characterizing the vibrations of the engine. The vibrations characterizing signal is filtered by a low pass filter to form the characteristic. The filtering selects low frequency components of the signal. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an internal combustion engine.
