The system has an identification unit (20) to identify parameters of a preset transmittance model of an electrical energy storage unit (10) based on identification current and voltage response of the unit (10) to the current. An estimation unit (22) estimates the state of charge of the unit (10) by evaluating, for identified parameters, a predetermined state of charge estimation function whose variables are parameters of the model. An independent claim is also included for a method for calibrating a state of charge estimation system.
