The device has a fuel injector and an intake air inlet in upstream of an intake duct (6), and an inlet valve in downstream of the duct. The injector diffuses fuel inside the duct. A protective air shield (111) is provided along an inner wall (61) of a deflector sleeve (3) of the duct and limits the contact of fuel jets with the wall (61). The sleeve has openings for air circulation between outer and inner walls of the sleeve.
