The method involves providing a locating and alerting device (15) carried by a user e.g. skier, and having a global positioning system locating module that provides the position of a user. The device is constructed to detect an emergency situation of the user and to remotely transmit an emergency signal containing the position of the user, to a monitor (12). The user is searched for by another module having the same characteristics as that of the former module. An independent claim is also included for a locating and alerting system for implementing a method to locate and alert a user.
