A simulation system for use in training an operative to use a flexible endoscope, such as a fibre optic bronchoscope, which is effective, adaptable and relatively inexpensive. A "box" (10) mimics the anatomical space into which the endoscope is to be passed and manipulated. The box (10) has an end plate (14) with an orifice (18) through which the tip of the flexible tube (20) of the endoscope can be passed into the space defined by the box interior. The flexible tube cooperates with a carriage assembly (24) that moves up and down in the box (10) with movement of the tube (20), and a camera (40) is suspended below the carriage assembly (24) facing the tip of the tube (20). Images captured by the camera (40) are fed to a computer system for processing so as to measure the movement of the tube (20) and display a simulated view of the movement on a screen.
