A method of controlling a safety system 44 for a vehicle (10) in response to the determination of an adaptive roll acceleration coefficient may utilise signals from; a roll rate sensor 34, a lateral acceleration sensor 32, a longitudinal acceleration sensor 36 and/or a yaw rate sensor 28. The safety system 44 and the sensor may be coupled to a controller 26. The controller 26 determines the mass of a load that has been added to the vehicle (10) and the height of the added mass for use in controlling the vehicle safety system 44 in relation to roll dynamics. Alternatively, the controller may determine a roll gradient, roll acceleration coefficient and/or a roll rate parameter that takes into account the added mass and height of the mass.
