PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of improving the fault detection rate of a system by expanding the function of a watchdog timer by software and improving runaway detection accuracy. PSOLUTION: For the microprogram runaway detection method, in the microprogram runaway detection system having a central processing unit for performing a program and a timer, a first program and a second program for controlling and managing the timer are prepared. The central processing unit is made to perform a step of having the second program give a notice to the first program as first set time, a step of having the first program set the first set time to the timer, a step of notifying second set time before the first set time elapses after the second program notifies the first set time, a step of having the first program set the second set time to the timer, and a step of resetting the central processing unit on the basis of the notifying conditions of the first set time and the second set time.
