PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous dispersion of an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer which can form a film excellent in gas barrier properties and transparency. PSOLUTION: A method for producing the aqueous dispersion of an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer comprises using an ethylene-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer wax as a dispersion stabilizer for the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer. The dried coated film of the aqueous dispersion excels in gas barrier properties and transparency, and can be suitably used as a coating material for films, metals, rust preventive steel plates, and coated paper.
