PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a subporphyrin compound which is excellent in an absorbancy index, a maximum absorption wavelength, and an absorption form and is useful as a pigment for forming a recording layer for an optical recording medium being able to respond the optical recording using a blue laser light, and a process for its production. PSOLUTION: The specific subporphyrine compound is produced by a production method comprising a reaction process of mixing a 2-(5-oxo-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)acetic acid derivative and a boron compound, to react them.
