A system, apparatus and method for determining the number of crowds using visual hull information are presented. In one embodiment, an image sensor generates a conventional image of a crowd. Based on the conventional image, the silhouette image is determined next. The intersection of the silhouette image cone and the working volume is determined. The projection of the intersection region on the plane is determined. Planar projections from some image sensors are collected by crossing the image sensor to form a subdivision pattern. Polygons are actually identified and excluded. The upper and lower limits of the number of individual polygons are determined and stored in the tree data structure. This tree receives and updates new information from the image sensor over time. The number of crowds is equal to the lower limit of the root node of the tree.
