PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a particle which is used for a particle moving type display unit, requested to have excellent characteristics of charging stability and dispersibility and further requested that the dispersion of each of these characteristics of charging stability and dispersibility is made narrow among particles since moving properties of particles are different from one another and the display quality is affected seriously, particularly, owing to differences of these characteristics. PSOLUTION: The method for producing the particle for the particle moving type display unit comprises the steps of: beforehand producing a polymer compound by living radical polymerization so that the polymer compound has a small molecular weight distribution index ((weight-average molecular weight)/(number-average molecular weight)) and precisely-controlled number-average molecular weight; and reacting the produced polymer compound with a reactive functional group of a coloring particle on the surface thereof to graft the polymer compound on the coloring particle while interposing a covalent bond between them. When the polymer compound-grafted coloring particle is used as the particle for the particle moving type display unit, the dispersion of each of these characteristics can be made narrow among the particles.
