PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method which perform printing on a short-side part of a plate-like work. PSOLUTION: The apparatus 1 comprises a fixed-type printing unit 10 which is fixed and has a plurality of fixed-type ink jetting print heads 12 having a plurality of ink-jetting nozzle openings, a conveyer device 20 which can move the work 2 along with the printing unit, detection devices 30 and 32 for detecting at least one of the dimensions and position of the short-side part 2' to be printed and the moving speed of the work on the conveyer device which are installed in the upstream side of the printing unit, a storage device 40 which stores image data of the print to be imparted on the short-side part 2', and a control device 50 which exchanges data with the print heads, the detection devices, and the storage device and controls and adjusts each of the print heads according to detected data output by the detection devices so that ink is jetted merely from the nozzle openings within the printing range corresponding to the short-side part to which actually printing is performed.
