PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve compression efficiency by reducing a compression error further in encoding an information source using separate approximation and vector quantization processes.;SOLUTION: A signal group input section 16 records an encoding subject group in an input signal group memory 11 as an input signal group. A selection section 13 selects a couple of a base signal and an weight factor signal for the input signal group among a set of signals corresponding to index information recorded in a code book memory 12. An approximated signal generating section 14 generates an approximated signal group by multiplying the selected base signal by each weight factor of the weight factor signal, while an error signal generating section 15 generates a group of error signals formed between respective signals of the input signal group and of the approximated signal group. The generated error signal group is inputted in the signal group input section 16 as an input signal group, and then the processes are repeated.
