PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light valve unit having an exciting function capable of surely exciting with simple constitution, and to provide a projection type video display device in which the light valve unit is loaded. PSOLUTION: The light valve unit is equipped with: a first holder 51 integrally holding a transmission type liquid crystal light valve 22, an incident side polarizing plate 21 and a field lens 20a arranged on the incident surface side of the transmission type liquid crystal light valve 22; a second holder 71 holding an emitting side polarizing plate 23 arranged on the emitting surface side of the transmission type liquid crystal light valve 22; a first supporting member 42 for supporting the first holder 51; a second supporting member 43 coupled with the first supporting member 42 so as to support the second holder 71; first elastic supporting means 52a and 52b supporting the first holder 51 so as to displace on the first supporting member 42; and a first electromagnetic driving means having first coils 61a and 61b provided on the side of either the first holder 51 or the first supporting member 42 and first permanent magnets 62a and 62b provided on the side of the other, and driving the first holder 51.
