PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extra-high pressure mercury lamp device wherein a bulb is prevented from being devitrified, and accordingly a high illuminance maintenance rate can be obtained, high reliability for an airtight seal part can be obtained, and a long service life can be obtained, and an extra-high pressure mercury lamp lighting device utilizing it. PSOLUTION: This extra-high pressure mercury lamp device is equipped with an AC lighting type extra-high pressure mercury lamp, and the mercury lamp is equipped with a bulb having side tube parts connected to both ends of an arc tube, metal foil is airtightly embedded in each of the side tubes to form the airtight seal part, and in the arc tube, a pair of electrodes are disposed face to face, and a halogen gas or a halide, and mercury of 0.15 mg/mmSP3/SPor more is confined. This device is also equipped with conductive members provided on the peripheries of both side tube parts in the extra-high pressure mercury lamp, and a DC power supply to impress a voltage having a value controlled so that the potential of the conductive members is maintained at a potential level lower than the average potential of the electrodes, and a voltage impressing means formed so that wiring on the negative side is connected to the conductive member and wiring on the positive side is connected to one side of an external lead rod.
