PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain carbon fibers capable of suppressing formation of fluffs by mechanical friction, etc., and excellent in process passableness by applying a compound having a structure in which a (hydroxy)alkylene oxide is added to both terminals of a bisphenol type skeleton as a sizing agent to the carbon fibers.;SOLUTION: This sizing agent is obtained by using a compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by formulae I to V [R1 and R2 are each H or an alkyl; m, n, j, k, x and y are each an integer of 1; (m+n) is 2-60; (j+y) is 2-40 and (k+x) is 2-40] as a principal component.
