PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve smooth and prompt restart.;SOLUTION: The furnace body 1 of this plasma melting furnace has: a base metal M contained in its bottom; an ash feed port 2 for feeding ash onto the base metal; a plurality of electrodes 7 and 8 positioned in such a manner as to be capable of moving toward and away from the base metal, from the ceiling part of the furnace body 1; a power source device 11 for generating a plasma arc between each of the electrodes and the base metal by applying voltages of different polarities to the electrodes 7 and 8; and a slag discharge opening 3 for discharging a slag S heated and melted by the plasma arc over the base metal. A starting oxygen burner 21 is provided for heating and melting the slag solidified over the base metal below the space between the electrodes 7 and 8, at least during restart. A burner moving device 22 which moves the oxygen burner 21 into and out of the furnace body 1 is provided.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
