PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely produce the subject compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing coloring matters, etc., from inexpensive raw materials. SOLUTION: A 2-naphthol compound of formula I[R1 is a group capable of being substituted on a naphthalene ring; (m) is 0-6] is reacted with a carbonyl compound of formula II (R2 , R3 are each independently an alkyl, etc.; R4 is H, an alkyl, etc.,) in the presence of a hydrazine compound and an acid catalyst to obtain a 1,1-disubstituted-1H-benzo[e]indole compound of formula III, e.g. a hydroxy-substituted-1,1-disubstituted-1H-benzo[e]indole compound of formula IV. In the reaction, the compound of formula II and the hydrazine compound are used respectively in amounts of 0.5-3 equivalent moles and 0.5-5 equivalent moles, based on the compound of formula I, and an acid (e.g. a protonic acid) is also used in an amount of 0.9-3 equivalent moles based on the hydrazine compound. A solvent such as an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent is used in an amount of 1-50 times weight that of the compound of formula I. The reaction temperature is preferably 80-200 deg.C, and the reaction time is 1-80hr.
