PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly selectively obtain 1,1,1-trifluoroethane by reaction of vinylidene fluoride with hydrogen fluoride in a liquid phase in the absence of catalyst to effect rapid, but very mild reaction. ;SOLUTION: The aimed 1,1,1-trifluoroethane is obtained by reaction between vinylidene fluoride and hydrogen fluoride in a liquid phase in the absence of catalyst pref. at -50 to 120 (esp. -30 to 100)°C in the molar ratio: hydrogen fluoride/vinylidene fluoride of 1-20 under a pressure of 2-30 bar. The above reaction is pref. carried out in a continuously operating reactor, wherein the residence time of the reactants is appropriately 1 min to 2 h.
