PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an accuracy of a molten metal surface level measurement by applying an electric current of an electromagnetic coil at a fixed cycle, and setting an OFF time of the electric current passage at any numbers so as to measure the molten metal surface at OFF time only and produce an output. ;SOLUTION: An operation of an electromagnetic generation device is made by ON/OFF pattern. During one ON/OFF pitch, the electric current of the electromagnetic coil is applied with 1-5 cycles. While the electric current is passing through, the arbitrary numbers of OFF time are arranged, and the molten metal surface level is measured, and the data is outputted at OFF time only. It is preferable to set a frequency f of a cycle period at 60≤f≤400 Hz, and ON/OFF pitch of the electric current passage To at 30≤To≤300 msec. It is preferable that a rotating magnetic field direction of the electromagnetic coil current is made to be a normal rotation/reverse rotation. An electric current of such a small value may be applied so as not to create electromagnetic field interaction between a spiral flow type leveler or a die built-in type leveler and the electromagnetic coil at the time when passage of the electromagnetic current is OFF.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
