The present invention relates to a process for producing tungsten carbides by carburizing in a gaseous phase tungsten powder and/or suitable tungsten pulverized precursor at temperatures ranging from 850 to 950 degC. According to the invention, a mixture of COi2/CO with COi2 content greater than the Boudouard equilibrium content corresponding to the carburizing temperature is used as carburizing gas phase wherein the carburizing is carried out at carbon activity ranging from 0.4 to 1.
