A process for synthesis of SSS stereoisomer of imidapriJ of formula (I) and hydrochloride salt thereof of formula (I), from a diastereomeric mixture of formula (II), In the process diastereomeric mixture of formula (II) is reacted with an organic acid in a ester or ketonic solvent. Then optically pure SSS isomer of imidaprit t-butyl ester is selectively precipitated from the given solution in form of acid addition salt Finally the said SSS isomer of imidapril acid is converted to addition salt to the imidapril hydrochloride salt.
