A method of converting (Z)-l-(3,5-disubstituted phenyl)-2-(4-substituted phenyl)ethene of general formula (II) to (E)-l-(3,5-disubstituted phenyl)-2-(4-substituted phenyl)ethene of general formula (I). wherein Rsub1/sub, Rsub2/sub, Rsub3/sub are same or different and independently represent (Csub1/sub-Csub4/sub))alkyl, (C,-C4)alkoxy(CrC4)alkyl, (Csub1/sub-Csub4/sub))alkoxy(Csub1/sub-Csub4/sub))alkoxy(Csub1/sub-Csub4/sub))alkyl, allyl, vinyl, silyl, formyl, acyl, aryl(Ci-C4)alkyl or substituted aryl(Ci-C4)alkyl group. The present invention also provides a method for the conversion of (E)-l-(3,5-disubstituted phenyl)-2-(4-substituted phenyl)ethene of general formula (I) prepared by a method described above to E-resveratrol of the formula (III)
